Thanjavur T R Kamala Murthy was conferred the title of Harikatha Vachaspati at a function organised by the V Narayana Iyer Memorial Trust in Chennai on August 10.
The title was conferred by Madras High Court Judge Karpaga Vinayagam. She was also presented the Dr M A M Ramaswamy Award on the occasion.
The Dr Nalli Award was presented to Jayarama Sarma while the N K Mahadeva Iyer Award was given to Kalyanapuram
Aravamudhan.
The awards were given away as part of the 14th Annual Day celebrations of the Trust.
Kamala Murthy, a top grade artiste with AIR, is renowned for her Harikatha discourses.
Tamil scholar Avvai Natarajan recalled that Harikatha had taken roots in Maharashtra and later came to Tamil Nadu and was popular particularly in Thanjavur. Among those who spoke at the function were Trust Chairman Narayana
