This virtuoso Indian jazz pianist, Madhav Chari, who has performed internationally, played at the British Council in Chennai on August 22 on 'Jazz Interpretations of British composers'.
Madhav Chari has performed with jazz legends such as Max Roach and Ed Thigpen. Chari's solo concert showcased British songwriters and their compositions that have become jazz standards.
What is perhaps not commonly known is that British songwriters/composers and musicians have contributed significantly to jazz compositions.
Dimmed lights, tangy rhythm and some soul, jazz can be scintillating and balmy at the same time.
At the British Council, Chari played a selection from the works of these British composers along with a few of his own compositions. His interpretations drew from jazz, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, blues and classical music traditions.
The concert showed the range and depth of jazz repertoire as well as the contemporary nature of this genre of music.
