Alliance Francaise of Madras presents Zahrra
The
Alliance
Francaise of Madras presents Zahrra on the occasion of the 'Fete de la
Musique' on Saturday, 19th June, 2004, at 1900 hrs at the Alliance
Francaise of Madras Auditorium, 24, College Road, Nungambakkam,
Chennai-6.
Started in 1982 in France
by the Ministry for Culture, 'La Fete de la Musique' has developed, into
first a European and later an international event, celebrated in more than
100 countries. It is a popular event dedicated to music in every form.
Professional musicians as well as amateurs participate and play to their
hearts' content. This year, Alliance
Francaise of Madras has arranged for a concert for by the students
(present as well as past): Carnatic music, piano, guitar, songs!
The evening will end with
a concert by Zahrra, a young music group with Tanvi (ex-student of AFM),
Shiva and Shyam who will play subtle mixes of salsa, samba, rhumba, kumbia,
rai, Arabic and Brazilian....
ZAHRRA: Fuse life
experiences, cultural excess and an absolute love for music and you'll get
three dedicated musicians who call themselves Zahrra. Mixing rhythms and
sounds - the band blends the traditional, new and inspired instruments
from all over the world to make sounds that guarantee musical journeys of
incredible texture and intensity. Zahrra has many a aning and besides
being a quaint palace city close to Cordoba, or meaning 'a little' in
Hindi - this band packs a whole lot more!
On the occasion of the
Music Day, Zahrra performs at the Alliance
Francaise. Packed with tantalising beats, sensual rhythms and a
smattering of classy renditions from Africa, Spain, Arabia and Cuba!

Ganesh Kumaresh
(Violinists) |
Shiva -
(Percussionist): He plays the drums, conga, djembe, bongo, doumbek,
the ghatam and the timbale among others! A freelance percussionist, Shiva
has worked with the likes of Donan Murray, Ganesh Kumaresh and Keith
Peters. He is also a part of the contemporary folk band Oikytaan, led by
Bonnie Chakraborty.
Shyam - (Pianist):
Shyam started with Carnatic music at a very young age and went on to learn
Western classical under Augustine Paul, his guide and mentor on the black
and white. With two albums to his credit, this freelance pianist has
played with Harris Jayaraj. He also programmes and arranges music for
private albums.
Tanvi - (Singer):
Give her Arabic, Latin or Spanish and she'll sing it just like it is;
versatile singer and an artist, Tanvi is trained in Hindustani and Western
classical music. She draws extensive influence from Latin and Arabic music
in addition to Cumbia, Danzon, Rhumba, Son, Salsa, Bahian, and Samba -cancsao,
Wahrani, Rai and jazz. Her most recent projects also include singing for A
R Rahman in Yuva (Fannaa) and New (Iniyadhu), as well as for
advertisements and radio.
Also featuring Parthi
(rhythm guitar), Allwyn, Balaji and Satish (percussions), Senthil
(violinist), Rachna, Chandrika, Satvika (backing vocals)

(Bass guitarist) |
Keith Peters (bass
guitar) - Needs no introduction as far as the music goes. One of the most
sought after and respected musicians in the country. Peters has travelled
across the world for performances and is one the busiest musicians in the
business.
Patrick Fernandes (lead
guitar) Master of jazz guitar and a music career spanning 25 years,
Fernandes has innumerable live shows to his credit and is one of the most
senior musicians in the city.
Zahrra 's performance at Alliance
Francaise of Madras is an open house event and is open to everyone.
