The Art of Expectation
The British Council presents an evening with Mira T Sundara Rajan, an accomplished Western Classical
pianist, on Friday 11 June, 1830 hrs at the British Council, 737 Anna Salai, Chennai. She is a
UK-based pianist and great granddaughter of legendary poet C Subramania Bharati.
Mira will play from the works of the German-Romantic composer Robert Schumann, 20thcentury
Russian pianist and composer Sergei Rachmaninov, and Argentinian composer Alberto
Ginastera. Mira's special interest lies in the music of Johannes Brahms, which will also feature in this concert.
She will also interpret a masterwork - - from Beethoven's last period, his Sonata Opus 101, which is
rarely performed.
Mira will provide an introduction to each of the composers and major works featured in the
programme and will talk about the relevance of Western Classical music in multi-cultural Britain today.
About Mira Sundara Rajan
Mira Sundara Rajan has studied and performed in the Western classical tradition for the past 25 years.
Though trained in the Western tradition, Mira has a long familiarity with Indian classical music to
which she has been exposed through the works of her great grandfather Subramania Bharati. A
versatile musician apart, Mira teaches Copyright Law at Queen Mary, University of London.
Mira acquired her basic training in music in Canada and France. In 1999, she moved to the UK to
undertake doctoral studies at Oxford University, and became intensively involved in the study of the
German and Russian romantic repertoire, and in piano performances in Oxford and London.
