'Jay Jay' a musical hit

Music-Bharadwaj
Lyrics- Vairamuthu

The combo of Bharadwaj-Vairamuthu-Saran has delivered another musical hit in 'Jay Jay' which is to be released on November 14, 2003. Actor Madhavan, who rode on the crest of success when 'Run' songs became hits, is lucky this time round too.

Hariharan's 'Unnai Naan' and 'Kadhal Mazhaiye' by Srinivas are two numbers which are already popular. 'Unnai Naan' has some new-style lyrics from Padmasri Vairamuthu. In the Pallavi, Unna Naan in the first line is repeated twice. In the next line, 'Kandavudan' is also repeated twice, and the 'Nenjukulle' in the third line is also uttered three times. Thus the song goes this way,

Unnai Naan, unnai naan, unnai naan
Nenjukulle, nenjukulle, nenjukulle
Kandavudan, kandavudan, kandavudan...

Hariharan has sung it melodiously and with verve too -- as only he can -- giving a punch to the words "Jay Jay unakku Jay Jay".

It is not too often that Vairamuthu will say Jay Jay to Jay Jay (is he sending a signal to J Jayalalithaa, a kind of give-the-devil-her-due tribute?).

'Nee sooriyanai sutterikkum thaamaraiya" again is a loaded line since there is strained relationship between the Sooriyan (the DMK symbol is Rising Sun) and Thaamarai (the BJP symbol is Lotus). Is he indicating the parting of ways between the DMK and the BJP? You can never put it past the Kavipperarasu to throw in a few subtle political digs! (Remember the lines 'Puzhal varum nerathil poochendu koduthaay, puriyaatha puthir nee Baba' in the film 'Baba'?)

'Kadhal Mazhaiye' is rendered by Srinivas with vigour. A brilliant composition by Bharadwaj, he has the knack of getting the best out of this versatile singer (just as in Apple Penne Nee Yaro in Roja Koottam). This song is bound to be a chart-buster.

'Pengal Nenjai' from K K and Mahalakshmi is a peppy number. Vairamuthu's lyrics, linking Madhava to a Badava, will go down well with the youth.

Similarly, Suchitra (of Radio Mirchi fame) has turned in a good performance with another peppy number, 'May Maadham thonoothettil major aanene' and she is bound to steal several hearts too with her song aimed at the youth.

Chakravarthi's Zee Boomba and Reshmi's 'Unnai Ninaikkave' are two other songs where those normally singing tracks have been given opportunities by music director Bharadwaj. They have performed satisfactorily.

That seems to be the prevailing trend. Different voices in one album. No one can complain of monotony as far as voices are concerned. The producer of the film, V Ravichandran, of Oscar Films (P) Ltd, is said to have laid down only one condition when the movie was planned -- that he would okay the songs. According to director Saran, Ravichandran had no problems at all as the tunes prepared by Bharadwaj were straightaway okayed by the producer the very first time he heard them. Saran said he had similarly approved the tunes of Bharadwaj in his earlier four films. The songs were liked by the people too straightaway, he added. Such is the implicit faith he has in Bharadwaj. Similarly, Saran says he would not like to change his lyricist Vairamuthu too. His lyrics were something special and he was fortunate that the combination of Vairamuthu and Bharadwaj had also worked well as in the past.

The sucees of the 'Jay Jay' audio cassette could well rub off on the film. Maddy, in any case, needs a hit. A musical hit could make the job easier.
