Music Academy journal
During the music season of 2002, the
Music Academy released its journal for the previous year. The Academy Journal has over the years been one of the most important publications in the Carnatic music world and its archives house some of the best articles written by greats such as T V Subba Rao, B Subba Rao, Tiger Varadachariar, V Ragahavan and in later years, T S Parthasarathy. For many years it was a quarterly, but now it is an annual publication.
The 2001 release begins with a summary of the proceedings of the conference that took place that year. It has the text of the speeches given by the chief guests and also the president of the conference, Umayalpuram K Sivaraman. It has brief profiles of the principal awardees.
The next section deals with a summary of the conference proceedings of that year. Of particular interest are the resolutions passed with respect to the ragas Ananda bhairavi, rItigauLa, kEdAragauLa, nArAyaNagauLa and
Ahiri.
Then follow the detailed articles of all those who presented papers during the conference. The articles on svarajati/jatisvaram by Dr Ritha Rajan, rhythms and talas suitable for different compositions by Dr S R Janakiraman, talanubhava in the music trinity by Vidya Shankar, connotation of the kriti and Padam by Dr Pappu Venugopala Rao and 'paNNiru tirumuraiyuL onbadAm tirumuraiyAna tiruisaippa matrum tiruppalANDu' by Dr Pramila Gurumurthy are excellent.
There are, of course, one or two downright mediocre submissions which would not have found their way into an Academy journal 10 years ago, but that is neither here nor there. Also, what happened to the practice of publishing notations and script for rare compositions that was one of the well-established features of past journals? The Academy ought to revive this.
Overall, the volume was an excellent one in terms of content and would be useful for research students in music.
