Semmangudi Awards for veteran artistes
Bharat
Kalachar, dedicated to the promotion of fine arts, cultural heritage and values, conducted, under the Endowment scheme of P Obul Reddy & P Gnanamba, the Tyagaraja Aradhana at the Y G
P Auditorium, T Nagar, in Chennai on Sunday.
Senior musicians and instrumentalists paid their reverential homage to the Thiruvaiyaru saint on the occasion. The pancharatna kritis (the five gems of Tyagaraja’s compositions) were rendered fervently, in accordance with tradition.
The occasion was also wisely utilized to honour five senior artistes (three vocalists and two instrumentalists) through the distribution of the Dr Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer
Veteran Awards (cash prize of Rs 2,000 and relevant citations for each) in memory of the Sangeetha Pithamaha, who was also the Chairman, Advisory Council, Bharat Kalachar, till his end.
The five artistes honoured were Srinivasa Iyengar (vocalist), octogenarians Thirumalai Iyengar (vocalist) and Kalaimamani Chittoor Gopalalkrishnan (violinist), as also septuagenarians G N Desikan (vocalist) and Nagai S Soundararajan
(mridangam).
The citation recognised the outstanding talent, dedication and achievement in the field of Carnatic Music of these artistes for several decades and invoked God’s blessings on them for their long life and health to render further significant service for the advancement of the fine art.
All the artistes have dedicated themselves, in strict adherence to
sampradaya, the pristine promotion of carnatic music right from a very young age till date and have won many prestigious titles and awards over the years. It is most heartening to record here that all of them continue to be active artistes. Gopalakrishnan has had the unique privilege of playing violin solo (Carnatic Music) before the then Viceroy Lord Wavell during the British regime.
Industrialist P Obul Reddy presided and distributed the Awards.
