Vaanam Vasappadum

It is a pity that the film Vaanam Vasappadum had to be released after the death of its music director, Mahesh, who turned in a brilliant bit of work in this film.

This one music album would suffice to show to the world that his death is a great loss to the music world. He died after a long battle with cancer, a battle that he won though he finally succumbed to it. He won because he refused to allow it to conquer his spirit that was indomitable.

He continued his work of music composition even while grappling with the disease, enjoying life with zest till the end.

His work in Vaanam...is exceptional. His 'Nammavar' for Kamal Hassan was good. But this one is even better.

The pick of the lot are two Hariharan numbers - 'Kangal Theendi Theendiye' by Hariharan and Sujatha, with lyrics by Vairamuthu, and 'Uyire Uyire' (rendered by Hariharan and Ganga, lyrics Kavivarman). The melodious voice of Hariharan with some superb expressions and variations render the first song a memorable one. In the 'Uyire' song, Hariharan hits the higher octave with effortless ease, packing the song with verve and gusto.

The title song by Srinivas and Timmy has a lot of verve and zest - reflecting Mahesh's love for life.

Srinivas has another superb number, 'Kanne Kanne Kalangadhe', which is a situation song, and has both melody and pathos in it. Srinivas does justice to the mood of the song. This song is penned by Jayendra and he can take the credit for some meaningful and expressive lines here.

'Megame, Megame' by Harini is a melodious number, although reminiscent of the Chitra number in 'Aasai'. However, Mahesh has done an outstanding job with the orchestration and arrangement.

'Vaanam Uyaram' by Harish Raghavendra and Gopika Poornima, and Ranjit's solo number 'Seithi, Suda Suda Seithi' are the other two good numbers of this album. Mahesh was assisted by Sundar Babu. P C Sreeram has taken great pains to shoot the songs well.

A R Rahman dedicated his Unity of Light concert in Chennai to this fine composer.

Mahesh is dead! Long live Mahesh!!
