Music-A R Rahman

DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW. That is, I'm asking you not to waste time reading this. Rush to the nearest shop and get yoursef a cassette/CD of 'Kangalal Kaidhu Sei'.

Just when you thought that Rahman was going too youth, and giving peppy kind of music, rather than his lovely melodies, here comes 'KKS'. A beautiful album with lovely songs.

Director Bharathiraja's introductory speech on Side-A is something new. He introduces himself, says the film is a love-based and conveys to the listener that A R Rahman has composed the music. The manly voice evokes your interest and sets you thinking when he talks about love.

I must confess that I've never heard a better ARR-Hariharan combo number than the Hariharan chorus, 'Azhagiya Cinderella'. Hariharan is allowed to travel into new regions of music and emote higher passions. His voice is as pleasant as ever to hear; the chorus is good; all instruments used here are good; the whole song is simply great.

In the Anarkali song, sung by Karthik, Chitra and Shivamani, Shivamani opens in the Hindustani style and the Tabla accompanying him is rhytmic and nice to hear. Karthik is such a lucky guy. He gets to sing very good songs. He sings 'Anarkali' smoothly, the freshness in his voice remaining. Chitra sounds young and good here.

The 'Thikuruviyay' song begins with an astonishing voice that makes you wonder how a person could sing like that. Johnson, Harini and Mukesh have such this song. The opening tune sounds a bit like 'Dhool', though. Harini pronounces the difficult-yet-good lyrics clearly and is her usual smooth self. Johnson seems to be a new name. The flute and guitar are put to good use here; the ending of the song showcases Harini's versatality in singing 'gamakas'.

The best song on side-B is the Unni Menon-Chinmayi song 'Ennuyir Thozhi'. I've been humming this song day and night, wherever I go. It starts beautifully with Rahman's piano. Unni Menon and Chinmayi team up after 'Sandhipoma' (E20-U18); here the effect is wonderful. On the whole, one of the best melodies composed by ARR. It's worth going a thousand miles to hear this one.

'Ah Ah Thamizhamma', sung by Rehana, Matangi, Blaaze is a 'masses' song. A sure chart-buster. A peppy number, it is a mixture of classical and western. The singers chosen suit the song style. Blaaze's recitation mixes well with the tempo.

All the songs are very good and definitely worth hearing. The lyrics are also good. Rahman has churned out his best and got the best out of his singers, musicians and technicians.

KKS - A must buy.
