Lyrics: Ref. # 1

Meaning:
Pallavi: She will say that and yet she will say much more than that. She is not blameworthy; leave it alone.

Anupallavi: In the land where the river bends around like a moon, the presiding Lord Murugan has made her act like that.

Caranam 1: She used to come here often and borrow clothes and jewellery. Those days are over. She is now competing with me and lives in a two-storied house.

Caranam 2: She now has a nice bed. She also has expensive silk saris. She thinks there is no one else who is more fortunate than she. The days are gone when she was alone. She is now surrounded by a lot of maids.

General comments:

Padams gained currency in the 17th century. Padams have romantic lyrics and used Thamizh, Telugu and Malayalam as languages. Ghanam Krishnaiyer and Subbarama Iyer along with Muttut Tandavar were the major composers of Thamizh padams. Padams belong to the dance repertoire but are also sung in music concerts in view of the classical ragams in which they are composed. The emotional aspects of padams are very well suited for abhinayam in dance.

This particular padam describes the jealous state of mind of a damsel over somebody else’s fortune. Apparently, the newly-rich dame is ridiculing our heroine perhaps elated over her blessings. It appears that the rival dame has got the companionship of Murug(Es)an. Here the hero is Muttukkumaraswami of Vaideeswarankoil who happens to favour our rival dame. (We are already sympathising with our heroine here!)

Our nAyaki is doing a tongue-lashing about her rival. It seems the rival used to come to our nAyaki and borrow jewellery and clothes. Now she is swimming in fortune what with a two-storied house, fine furniture and nice silk saris. She also thinks that her rival has been favored by Murugan. Previously, she was all alone. Now she has lots of maids at her beck and call.

This padam is different from the normal genre in the sense it takes a castigating tone at somebody else instead of the heroine pining in love for her favourite God or sending her friend with a message to her Lord.

According to RangarAmanuja Iy..... - S.Pasupathy, Toronto, 5/9/2004

Subbarama Iyer lived in the latter half of the 19th century in and around Vaideeswarankoil, near Seerkazhi. Not much information is available regarding his parentage or education.

He composed many Thamizh padams which are romantic and sometimes erotic in lyrical content. All his padams are full of emotional expressions of a lovelorn maiden, peppered with proper words and tuned to classical ragams. He composed several padams in the ragams kAmbhOji, aTAnA, suruTTi, sAvEri, dhanyAsi, and tODi.

He published his padams in a book titled, 'MuttukkumArasAmipEril Padam' .

Some other Subbarama Iyer's compositions that are sung often in the dance and music concerts and commercial recordings are: ettanai sonnAlum (sAvEri)) nERRandi nErattilE (husEni), engE irundAlum, and padari varugudu (kAmbhOji), nERRu vandEnenRu (pantuvarALi), and innum parAmukham (bEgaDa).
