The Kartik Fine Arts concert of Sanjay Subrahmanyan witnessed a couple of examples of "concert etiquette" on the part of the organisers and audiences.
The curtains went up, showing the artistes seated on stage and ready to begin. A voice then boomed through a hidden mike, shattering the shruti and the general musical mood into which the performers must have gone: "Ladies and gentlemen, we are honoured that Mr XYZ of M/S ABCD Company, who is our main sponsor, is with us today. We consider it a privilege that he is here."
The voice waited expectantly for a round of applause but nothing was forthcoming. Who cares, was the audience attitude.
The concert began.
When the second piece was over, Mr XYZ stood up to leave. Immediately, there was a sound like a brace of birds taking flight. A Mama and Mami (call them A&B) rushed across the aisle and managed to corner XYZ at his seat itself. With their backs to the artistes, A&B began an engrossing conversation with XYZ who remained standing where he was. The conversation went on for a good three to four minutes, during which the artistes sat silent, waiting for it to come to an end. At the end of it, the trio made for the door and the concert resumed.
What was it that was so urgent that the three had to discuss it in the hall and not outside is anybody’s guess.
