Music has the capacity to mesmerise even the Gods, said Sri Sriranga Narayana Jeer Swamigal of the Sriranga Narayana Jeer Mutt, Srirangam, while inaugurating the 103rd year of the Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha in Chennai recently.
The Jeer pointed out that Ravana, though considered an evil force, had the capacity to mesmerise even the Easwaran with his music. This showed that music was capable of swaying the Gods and that it was a sure way of reaching out to the divinity.
Carnatic music was divine and was itself a Vedham, he said. The Jeer conferred the title of Sangeetha Kalasarathy on violin maestro M
Chandrasekaran.
The Jeer said the Gandharvas could sing very well. Andal herself had referred to the power of music, he added.
It was a rare feat for a music sabha to complete 100 years of existence. However, the Parthasarathy Sabha, which had nurtured classical arts of Tamil Nadu, was holding its annual festival of music for the 103rd year, he pointed out.
Jaya Arunachalam, director of the Sri Vidya Kayana Mandap, which had offered the premises at a concessional rate to the Sabha to hold its festival, lighted the traditional lamp.
Sabha secretaries M Krishnamurthy and K Hariharan outlined the activities of the
sabha.
Replying to the felicitations, Chandrasekaran said he was grateful to the sabha for honouring him and added that the credit really went to the greats of the past who had nurtured the instrument and rendered great performances, inspiring the next generation.
