The Tamil Nadu Governor P S Rama Mohan Rao, inaugurating the 61st music festival of the Tamil Isai Sangam in Chennai recently, said Carnatic music was a major unifying force in south India.
Delivering the inaugural address, the Governor while language could be seen as dividing the southern states, Carnatic music was a common factor which tended to bind the southern states. Carnatic music was, in fact, an unifying factor in the south, he added.
He also gave away prizes to the winners of various competitions held by the Sangam this year.
The Governor conferred the title of Isai Perarignar on film music director M S
Viswanathan.
Viswanathan, replying to the felicitations, thanked the Sangam for bestowing this honour on him, which was normally reserved for traditional musicians in the Carnatic field. Whatever he had achieved in this arena was due to the support and encouragement of his seniors who had taught him not just "sangitham but also ingitham (good music and good
behaviour)".
Sangam president Mr Justice P R Gokulakrishnan, secretary A C Muthiah (industrialist) and Mr Justice A R Lakshmanan, Judge of the Supreme Court, were among who traced the support given by the sangam to the cause of Tamil music.
The festival is on at the Raja Annamalai Mandram.
