Sabhas and awards

The flood continues unabated. Chennaivasis may wish that it were a flood of water but what we are now having is a spate of inaugurations.

To begin with, we had the inauguration of the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha’s Swarna Jayanti Mahotsav. The festival was inaugurated by Sri B K Krishnaraj Vanavarayar and he gave away the awards of Acharya Choodamani to N S Jayalakshmi and Nritya Choodamani to Vasanthalakshmi and M V Narasimhachari, the famed dance duo. Padma Subrahmanyam presided and also unveiled the portrait of Rukmini Devi Arundale.

Justice R Jayasimha Babu of the Madras High Court inaugurated the 52nd art festival of the Mylapore Fine Arts Club on December 13 by describing Madras as the Mecca of Carnatic music. He conferred the title of Sangita Kala Nipuna on T N Seshagopalan. The award comprise a citation, a medal and a cash prize of Rs 5,000. N Ramani and Kunnakkudi R Vaidyanathan presented prizes to those winning the competitions organised by the sabha.

The Wisdom Star of India award and the title of Sangeetha Ratna was given to Sudha Raghunathan by the Wisdom Magazine on December 13. Justice A K Rajan of the Madras High Court chaired the function.

Karaikkudi R Mani’s Sruti Laya Kendra had its festival’s inauguration on December 14, when R Krishnaswamy, president of the Federation of City Sabhas, gave away the Gowri Manohari and Guru Surajananda Awards to villupattu artiste Subbu Arumugam and violinist M Chandrashekharan. The awards comprise a cash component of Rs 10,000 each besides the medallion and citation. The C V Narasimhan and Nathan Endowments of Rs 1,000 each were also given away to the two artistes.

Narada Gana Sabha kicked off its festival with an inauguration by noted arts activist Dr Kapila Vatsyayan December 14. Prof C V Chandrashekhar was conferred the Nada Brahmam and Vairamangalam Lakshminarayanan was honoured as a senior musician.
