Manpoondia Pillai is considered to be the father of the Pudukottai school of percussion. He is also said to have invented the Khanjira. His life story of a lantern bearer at the Pudukottai palace who rose to become an artiste of repute is one of triumph of the human spirit. In his last years he became a renounced worldly life, becoming a sanyasi under the name of Murugananda
Swamigal.

Each year, the Palani M Subramanya Pillai Trust (set up in memory of the great percussion genius who was the most famous member of the Pudukottai school)
observed the Manpoondia Pillai arAdhana. This year the event was held on 11th January 2004. The formal puja
took place at Manpoondia Pillai’s samadhi off Tirugokarnam road en route to Pudukottai near the Adappanvayal Dairy Farm.
