Eating at the Woodlands Canteen in Narada Gana Sabha, where Kartik Fine Arts is holding court, is fraught with certain risks. By 8 p.m., most of the south Indian delicacies are exhausted and one is tempted by the enthusiastic staff to sample the north Indian varieties.
Therein lies the rub. Most of the dishes said to be from the north of the Vindhyas, are prepared with an exclusive base of chillies and chilli powder. One spoonful and your tongue bursts into flames. And if you are particular about mineral water, be warned. For earlier victims of this subterfuge have exhausted all supplies. You are expected to douse the flames at the water tap.
