 The
Margazhi Utsav on Jaya TV concluded with the awards presentation to various musicians by the Jeeyar Swamigal on December 15, 2003. The award of Bheeshma went to D K Pattammal (DKP). There were some inadvertent errors in the speeches of the Jeeyar and DKP, no doubt owing to their advancing years.
The Jeeyar, during his felicitation, suddenly developed a doubt if the woman was DKP. He turned around and asked a devotee if this was indeed DK Pattammal. When assured of this, he continued and then turned around once again and asked if she had sung the song gnAnapazhattai pizhindu. Several in the audience said the song was sung by K B Sundarambal. The pontiff then corrected himself.
When it came to her turn, DKP became highly emotional. She repeatedly thanked the Jeeyar as PeriyavAL and finally said her blessings would always be with him. On realising the import of what she had said, she made amends by saying that with age she was increasingly incapable of speaking well and begged the Jeeyar’s pardon.
