The Governor of Tamilnadu, P S Rama Mohan Rao, released 'Ode to Kunjamma', a pictorial biography of M S Subbulakshmi, at the Banqueting Hall of Raj Bhavan on Monday 8th December 2003. The eminent dancer Lakshmi Vishwanathan has authored the volume.
The programme began at 5.30 PM with Smt Uma Rao lighting the traditional kuthuvilakku. In her introductory speech, Lakshmi Vishwanathan spoke of her experiences while writing the book and also her meeting with M S, when she read out extracts of the book to her. M S appreciated the way the book had come out according to the author.
N Ram, Editor in Chief of The Hindu, then delivered his key note address. He spoke of his association with M S and her husband the late T
Sadasivam.
The Governor released the book and presented the first copy to N Ram. In his speech, the Governor said that M S was not only symbolic of south Indian music but of the music of the whole of India. He referred to her as a pan Indian artiste.
K V Balasubramaniam, Advertising Manager of The Hindu, proposed a vote of thanks. Subhashree Ramachandran sang songs popularised by M S. This presentation was for half an hour and comprised songs such as vandEham jagat vallabham, bhAvayAmi gOpAla bAlam, Okapari, kATrinilE varum gItam, kurai oNrum illai and maitrIm
bhajata.
