T K Radhakrishna Iyer, veteran flautist, passed away last week. He was 84.
Radhakrishna Iyer was the son of
T G Krishna Iyer, better known to music lovers as Lalita Dasa, the mudra under which he composed numerous songs. Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar was greatly attached to Lalita Dasa’s songs and made many of them popular. Chembai, who was Krishna Iyer’s neighbour in Santhome, named his house Lalita Sadan out of his regard for the composer.
Radhakrishna Iyer was born in 1919. He learnt to play the flute from Palladam Sanjeeva Rao, the great flautist of his times. He also learnt other aspects of music from his grandfather
T A Krishna Bhagavatar. In his time Radhakrishna Iyer was accompanied by the major stalwarts on the violin and
mridangam.
He was an A-grade artiste of AIR.
The Tamil Nadu government honoured him with the Kalaimamani title in 1978.
