The title of Ranjani Sangeetha Sagara was conferred on Carnatic vocalist T V Sankaranarayanan at the inauguration of the Sri Ranjani Sabha's seventh annual music festival in Chennai on December 6, 2003.
Presenting the award, educationalist Rashrmi Y G Parthasarathy said Sankaranarayanan was known for individual brilliance even while following the style of his uncle Madurai Mani
Iyer.
Swaras flowed during his concerts in the form of musical pyramids, she said adding that he had remained a humble practitioner of Carnatic music, contributing to the cultural scene both as a performer and as a teacher. She was happy to note that the concerts of the Sri Ranjani Sabha came free of cost. This would go a long way in taking Carnatic music to more people, she felt.
Tamil writer Karaikudi Sankara Sethu said as the initials of TVS suggested, Sankaranarayanan was known for his discipline, solidity and virtuosity.
Canara Bank general manager George Joseph said the bank was keen to promote classical forms of music. The tradition of Carnatic music must be fostered, he felt.
Replying to the felicitations, Sankaranarayanan said he was grateful to the sabhas and the rasikas for showering affection on him and for continuing to patronise the tradition of Carnatic music. He said he owed a great deal to God Almighty, his uncle Madurai Mani Iyer and his gurus.
Earlier, sabha secretary N Ramachandran said the concerts had no entry fee and rasikas were welcome to attend all the programmes. Sabha president R Srinivasan delivered the welcome address.
