Sri. R. Prasanna Prasanna is the foremost exponent of Carnatic classical music on the guitar. The deep-rooted classicism that characterises his music is a result of years of intensive training with the (late) vocalist Tiruvarur S. Balasubramanian and for the last 10 years with the renowned violinist Kum. A. Kanyakumari. Prasanna has stunned audiences around the world with his authentic renditions. He recently had the honour of being the first ever Carnatic musician to perform in Alaska. His concert in Fairbanks, Alaska, USA, which drew 1200 people, was considered to be the biggest ever musical concert of any kind held there. Prasanna has appeared on American’s major television networks like NBC, CBS, FOX, in addition to several other television and radio broadcasts in America & India. He has also given guest lectures and demonstrations in prestigious institutions like the Harvard University, MIT, Berklee College of Music, Florida State University, Tufts University, etc. He has released several acclaimed albums of Carnatic music on the guitar. Prasanna has performed with top Carnatic musicians in India and abroad, including Dr. L. Subramaniam, A.K. Palanivel, Dr. T.K. Murthy, Trichy Sankaran, Kanyakumari, T.V.G. and T.H. Vinayakram to name just a few. Prasanna has also excelled himself as a composer and performer of Western classical music, serious jazz, Bluesrock, etc., having performed with some of the best jazz musicians in the world. He composed in virtually every conceivable form of music which includes works for full symphony orchestra, string quarters, woodwind quintets, big band jazz, fusion, contemporary dance, jingles and advertisement films. His unique style, in composition and performance integrating Carnatic music and several forms of Western music in a serious manner, has won him several laurels from musicians and critics both in India and abroad. Prasanna has a degree in music majoring in classical and jazz composition from the Berklee College of Music, in Boston, which is widely regarded as the world’s finest college of contemporary music. He has won prestigious awards that include the ‘1999 Guitar achievement award’ and the ‘1999 Composition achievements award’ from the Berklee College of music. Prasanna is also one of the most sought after guitarist in Indian films, having worked extensively with top composers like Illayaraja, A. R. Rahman and several others. Prasanna has also excelled academically with a B.Tech degree in Naval Architecture from I.I.T. Madras, but has chosen to dedicate himself completely to music. |
