You know why the watchman hasn't come today? I said. Well,
it's not the first time he has been absent, said my husband who
was engrossed in reading the newspaper.
By the way, you needn't hurry through your cooking because I
am not going to office today, he added.
Oh, but why, I said.
Well, you forget that today is an important day for all men,
in fact the only day we have some identity which calls for a
celebration, he said.
But what has that got to do with your not
going to office? I asked.
You see, Tarun and Smitha will be calling to
wish me and they will be disappointed if I am not available, he
said.
But they can always call you after you return
from office, I said.
I knew you won't understand that we live
under different time zones, their day is night for us and vice
versa, he explained.
You don't seem to credit me with any
intelligence and commonsense for that matter, I rued.
Then you lack practical sense, he said
stressing on 'practical'.
What do you mean? I confronted.
You see, Smitha and Tarun leave for work
quite early and return late bone tired driving all those miles.
I am aware of that, I snapped.
Since they would like to prove their love and
affection for me by calling me on this day, I should be
available for them, don't you think so? he reasoned.
By the way you said something about the
watchman not turning up today, didn't you? he said suddenly
going back to where our conversation started.
Thanks for remembering what I said. He wanted
a holiday because his children were coming to greet him. It
appears his father is coming down from his
village to meet his grandchildren and this would serve a double
purpose, he said.
How? asked my husband.
Now, tell me who is the one who is wanting in
intelligence and commonsense and is in need of practical sense?
I teased.
