Spring-Summer in Marnay-sur-Seine

A painting exhibition of Pampa Panwar will be held by the Alliance Francaise of Madras, with the support of the French Embassy in India, at the Alliance Francaise gallery in Chennai from January 27 to February 8, 2004.

Pampa Panwar lives and works in India. She studied in London where she realized her first individual exhibition, before exhibiting several times in India. This artist draws her inspiration mainly from nature and the feelings that she experiences while observing. Admirer of Matisse, she wished to go to France to discover a new environment and different sensations.

She realized, during her residency at Camac, a polyptych composition: a Technicolour kaleidoscope capturing the mood of Spring Surnrner in Marnay sur Seine. Inspired by the surrounding ambience, her paintings have to be discovered through her process of working as an outsider, walking on the paths of Marnay and discovering, little by little, day by day, reflections of changing lights, the swirling river Seine, birds singing, flowers blooming, blue sky, smell of lavender, the ringing of the church bell hour by hour...

"I would like to exhibit the works that I did in France, during my residency at camac, Centre d'art, Marnay-sur-Seine in May-July 2001. The works were inspired by the spirit of Spring-Summer in French countryside. My principal preoccupation is to understand the overwhelming presence of nature, its tactility, its changing moods.

Essentially, a colourist, my inspiration is drawn from earth, moon, water, rain, cloud, wind, sun and fresh smells after the rain. My works are about captivating, fleeting poetic moments in nature. They are related to visual feelings and moods. To achieve the required mood, I play around with colours, forms and incorporate different materials to explore the seductive richness of textures.

Through a window, 1 look into the arena of colours: red, pink, yellow, green, playing their intuitive game,. May, June, July, composing 'Spring-Summer' picture poems underlying emotional chaos aspire towards balance, rhythm, reflection..."

Since her experience in France last year, Pampa has been involved in refining her knowledge of the language and its fusion into her paintings. Her attraction or passion for the language was because of its sensuous, poetic attribute, which integrates well with the mood of her works.

This exhibition will include around 22 paintings - mixed media works arranged in polyptych compositions. They are executed in acrylic, photography, computer imaging, collage and earth colours of Provence on paper. Apart from the works that she actually executed in France, there will be some more works which she is presently doing in continuation to her experience and inspiration that she gathered, there.
