Comedy time, folks

Making its way back into the hearts of Chennaivasis is the entertainment company ‘evam’ with their new production Python Hyssssteria. "Python Hyssssteria has a long and illustrious or shall we say notorious history?" humours Karthik Kumar, one of the two friends who started evam in 2003 with their first performance 'ART by evam' which was a roaring success.

"Our first performance was unforgettable because it successfully introduced theatre entertainment to a variety of new audiences, including college students and young professionals," reminisces Sunil Vishnu, co-founder, evam. The group is striving hard to achieve its sole objective of delivering quality entertainment.

"We intend to showcase six productions in 2004," informs Karthik. ‘Python Hyssssteria’, a blend of 16 British comedy sketches, created by the Python team, is one of their first performances for the New Year. The performance is open for the public from January 14 through January 18 at Sivagami Pethachi Auditorium.

The inception of this comedy is credited to five Englishmen and an American who came together in the sixties with their humorous show ‘Flying Circus’, which was an immediate hit with the British audience. ‘Python Hyssssteria’ by evam draws its craziness from here. "We have tried to intersperse the 16 distinct comedy sketches of the Pythons into one show with the help of music and dance. This will ensure that the tempo is up all evening," says Karthik.

The legacy of the Pythons lives on today in comics like Rowan (Mr Bean) Atkinson, Jim Carrey and in movies like 'There’s Something About Mary' and 'Bow Finger'.

The task of putting together 16 different comedies means a lot of coordination. "Different comedy sketches require different sets. Some plots require a bar while some others require a market place or the road, as the backdrop. This obviously means frequent set change," elucidates Sunil. The big challenge in such a situation is to retain the audience’s attention when the sets are being changed in the dark. "To combat this dilemma, the change of sets will be woven to be a part of the music and dance routine," he said.

The play essentially revolves around us, the ‘seemingly’ normal people. We all know what is right and what is the right way to do things, but what if there was a whole other world out there "who believed otherwise, who had a complete opposite view of what’s normal and what’s weird" and what if we met them one fine evening!

Promising an evening of mind-boggling entertainment and laughter are the young entrepreneurs from Mudra Institute of Communications. "We can assure you that you will not stop laughing all evening, except may be to catch your breath," humours Karthik.

The group also intends to bring together club evam whose members will be called ‘mave’. "This is an opportunity to create a group of like-minded people who value high-quality entertainment and are looking to be a part of a forum which offers them such entertainment on a continuing and concerted basis," adds Sunil. All it takes to be a mave is to possess a ticket for the show, full contact details and loads of enthusiasm.

Tickets are available at Marrybrown, Landmark, Odyssey, Shilpi, Amethyst, FabIndia and Fruit Shop on Greams Road. Concessional rates are available for students.
