Bharatanatyam

Deeptha Jayakar's

Deeptha Jayakar’s recent Bharatanatyam recital, under the auspices of the V D S Arts academy, Chennai, evidenced unmistakably the meaningful depth of training at Kala Darsana under eminent guru and senior artiste Jayanthi Subramaniam for over six years.

Deeptha, standard 9 student of P S Senior Secondary School, Mylapore, had her arangetram in April ‘03 when Chief Guest Nandhini Ramani, Music Academy Secretary, lauded her performance in glowing terms.

For the latest performance, Deeptha had Kalaimamani Srekala Barath, a frontline dancer who has won international acclaim, as the Chief Guest.

Deeptha began with the traditional Nattai-Adi-Pushpanjali and, thereafter, followed the Margam format with alarippu, jathi swaram, shabdam, varnam and the tillana.

The 30-minute varnam Rupamu Joochi (Thodi, Adi) was particularly worthy of special appreciation. Deeptha’s lithe, sensuous grace, gestural interpretations, aesthetic expressions and flowing movements were very pleasing. What was especially noteworthy of her performance was her teenage fervour. Her utter lack of nervousness was another significant feature throughout. Chief Guest Tejas Director Srekala took pains to endorse favorably all these aspects of Bharatanatyam so becomingly displayed by the artiste.

Guru Jayanthi conducted the nattuvangam with customary flair and technical excellence. Radha Badri, the vocalist, Kalaiarasan, the percussionist, and Vijayaraghavan, the violinist, embellished the recital.

Deeptha, it may be mentioned here with relevance, is a painter, a swimmer and a handicraft artist of no mean merit.
