Global Local Exhibition
The
British Council and
Forum Art Gallery present Global Local, an exhibition of contemporary design, from Thursday 10 June 2004, 1830 hrs, at the Forum Art Gallery, 57, Padmanabha Nagar, Fifth Street, Adyar, Chennai-20.
The exhibition addresses the impact of the physical closeness of alternative cultures on a group of designers both in India and the UK. The work explores their differing understanding of the way in which cultural sensitivities can be expressed through material objects, finding new spaces between stereotype and a total disengagement with place and identity.
The first section of the exhibition includes work from A Small Shop by Anshu Arora Sen, Weavers Studio, Indi Store, Manna Studio Line and Abraham and Thakore. This group of designers share an interest in materials and process that have an Indianness about it without producing objects that are seemingly Indian. The next section draws together Ghulam Sakina, Manish Arora, Ramachandran Karthikeyan, George Chakravarthi and Sabyasachi Mukherjee, whose works have an immediately recognisable Indian identity. The third section includes designers such as Jason Cherian, Doshi Levien, Tania Khosla, Rajesh Pratab Singh and Paul Khera. The works by these designers are neither overtly Indian nor is it assuredly global but have a delicate balance between the two.
The exhibition will be on view from 11 to 24 June from 1000 to 1830 hrs (except Sundays). Schools/colleges can fix a suitable tour time with the gallery to bring their students in batches to see the exhibition.
