MAC remembered
The 85th birth anniversary of M A Chidambaram was celebrated in Chennai on Sunday, October 12, 2003. Awards were presented to three distinguished citizens of Tamil Nadu, under the auspices of the M A Chidambaram Charities, by Union Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, S

The Annamalai Chettiar Award was handed over to 78-year-old Tamil scholar K Meenakshisundaram who hails from Coimbatore District in recognition of his service to the field of Tamil language and literature. He was the first Tamil professor to be appointed as Director of Collegiate Education. He had insisted for at least 50 per cent of the songs in the syllabus for the Music Course (previously there were none).
The M A Chidambaram Chettiar Award was presented to Vidwan V Lakshmanan for his contribution in the field of Astrology.
The A C Muthiah Award went to V Chandrasekaran, Chairman and Managing Director of Pentamedia Graphics, for his contribution in the field of Animation.
The awards carried a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and a silver casket each.
Thirunavukkarasar pointed out that M A Chidambaram and the charitable trust instituted in his name had contributed immensely to the fields of language, literature, culture, social welfare and health. He suggested that the Trust establish a medical college.
Earlier, the founder-trustee of M A Chidambaram Charities, Devaki Muthiah, lighted the traditional lamp while the Chairman of the Trust, A C Muthiah, who proposed a vote of thanks, referred to the activities of the Trust in various fields.
