Bringing Nicobars to the mainland
 The Bay islands, the lost world, the last world, treasured islands, coconut islands these are some of the names the Nicobar Islands have earned over the years. But how much do we, on the mainland, know about these 24 islands? Do you know that the Nicobar Islands have little in common with the Andamans with regard to flora, fauna, landscape and people basically everything!
On 1st November, 2003, NatureQuest offers Chennaiites a chance to familiarise themselves with these amazing islands. Manish Chandi, who has been working for over eight months in the Nicobars, will give a photo-presentation on these islands, the people, their way of life, the islands creatures and the virgin landscapes.
Manish Chandi works with ANET: the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Environmental Team (ANET is the island base of the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust). His interest in human ecology has led him to research one of the indigenous tribes of the Nicobars the Nicobarese, the wild resource utilisation of this tribe and their native methods of protecting the environment they live in.
Manish has travelled extensively on foot and by boat across the Nicobars and has observed the people, the wildlife and the landscape at close quarters. His photographs range from breathtaking shots of the sea and forests, to the wildlife of these areas (like giant robber crabs that climb coconut trees, and mangrove creeks teeming with saltwater crocodiles) to the day-to-day activities of the tribal people.
The interactive session is aimed at introducing and informing mainlanders about these little known islands. All are welcome.
