And I am back. After some sleepless nights
and confusions, Vini’s Corner is back. And before I know, it is
time to ring in the New Year. As the cliché goes, time just
flies. Before I realize, Thanksgiving weekend is over and as
November ends, the warm days of summer and fall seem like a
distant memory. The mercury dips close to the freezing mark and
the sun sets at around 5 p.m. engulfing everyone in darkness.
The mornings are worse; all you want to do is cuddle deeper into
the blanket and sleep on. But in spite of the cold weather life
goes on as usual.
But the best part of winter is the Christmas
celebrations and the festivities. Buildings are decorated with
twinkling lights spreading cheer and joy all over the gloomy
winter nights. And during moments of melancholy of winter the
twinkling lights lighten my mood. It is being a kid all over,
the bright lights, the pretty colors; the hanging stockings
cheer any person up. And, of course, there are all the Christmas
time favorites, hot spiced cider, hot chocolate, fruit cakes,
all concocted to give warmth. And then there are times when I
look at all the lights and wonder about the amount of
electricity spent on lighting these things up!
Somewhere in the middle of these cold days,
Karthigai, my favorite festival, came along. I braved the cold
to step out into the patio to put tealight candles, the closest
to the pretty agal vilakkus from home. I sat admiring the lights
flickering and re-living memories of past Karthigais. The rain
that inevitably falls on Karthigai day ruining the pretty kolams,
the pattasus saved from Diwali to light during Karthigai, the
new dresses saved from Diwali… all a part of precious memories.
Welcome back to Vini’s Corner and I am glad
to be back. Watch for things that catch my eye, the good and the
ugly, the funny and the serious as I traverse through life.
Vini’s Corner will still be a chronicle of the life of a
hyper-active, fun-loving, adventurous, 20-something female
striving to balance between work and home, passions and career,
traditions and practicalities and, of course, Chennai and
Houston! Welcome back!
