This
is an incident that took place when I was on vacation a few
weeks ago. With my brother and husband I was at a State Park
view an absolutely gorgeous waterfall in Hawaii. Thundering
water falling over more than 400 feet, covered with lush green
vegetation, the Akaka falls was indeed a sight!
Hiding behind cameras we went on a photo clicking frenzy and
were viewing the falls through the camera and never paused a
minute to think. It was then I heard a voice, the voice from a
young boy, a voice filled with awe. The voice said “ Mom, who
designed it?” Impulsively I turned around and looked at the
little boy who asked such a question. So innocent but filled
with unspoken words.
A simple question stopped me on my tracks and
made me look at the scenery in totally different eyes - in
wonder and amazement. Somewhere in the growing up processes I
had forgotten that everything around me is a work of wonder, a
work par excellence. A work to be treasured, protected and kept
pristine. And in the pursuit of bigger things some time I had
left behind the amazement and wonder and awe that the young boy
had. Regardless of age, I believe, nature should awe and amaze
us. And for nature to do that, we need to take steps to preserve
that pristine state.
Take a look at the amazing Akaka Falls and
you’ll agree with the little boy. It is a beauty something that
needs to be looked with eyes filled with awe and amazement and
not just through the camera lens.
