It
is the time for celebrations and it is the time I miss India the
most. Back-to-back festivals, the latest fashions, the yummy
food and times spent with family. These are the days when I try
to somehow infuse our festivals, customs, traditions and rituals
into our almost American lifestyle.
No holidays for special days and festivals lose their luster in
the busy daily routine. Navarathri and Kolus are something amma
talks about and something I just wish I could be a part of.
The
annual visit to our factory for Ayudha pooja, the fresh smell of
flowers, coconut, oodubathi and the latest songs blasting
through the audio system are just memories. The pori and sundal,
the must-have foods for the season, are just foods I crave for!
So how were my Navarathri celebrations, you ask? For eight
days I kept telling myself that I値l head to the temple and I
finally did and the Kolu, the only one I saw for the season.
And how will my Diwali be? I値l miss home, I値l miss
shopping, I値l miss the yummy treats, I値l miss the vedi satham
and the pollution, I値l miss the smells of ghee and oil in the
air, I値l miss visiting friends, I値l miss the times I spent
with family and will listen to the ten thousand wala go off on
the phone and smile.
And here in Houston, in my own small way, I値l celebrate the
day with good friends and just recall the days of the past in
India.
Festive wishes to everyone!
