The romance of Besant Nagar
Whenever we compare Chennai with, say, Bangalore or Mumbai, we always conclude saying Chennai is the good old thing and the best place to be in, though we admit that cities like Bangalore and Mumbai have a romance of their own.
That romance exists in a part of Chennai too; in Besant
Nagar.
The long road leading into Besant Nagar from Malar Hospital has seen it all; right from teenagers’ bike-fighting, claiming I-am-faster, to film shootings of a wide range of actors and actresses! It’s really THE place to ride a bike; same for the car.
As one zips down that road, one gets the tingling sensation of elevation; the same romance that was experienced in a Bangalore or a Mumbai; that very same romance.
Elliots Beach is the best place to be in Besant Nagar. The sands of the beach have been witness to many an interesting tale: from suicides and crimes to sweet nothings and soft whisperings. Saturday and Sunday evenings here are busy; college studs are seen strutting around with their ‘gang’ or sitting as a group in the famous ‘platform’.
Deeper into Besant Nagar, the Ashtalakshmi temple is a stupendous structure. Located on the shore of a beautiful-yet-dirty beach, the temple is a lovely building, the shrines are well-maintained; and the small stairs that lead one upstairs are oh, simply superb. A must visit for all.
“I’ve been around here for a quite a while. Everything about this area is nice. The air is great, the trees a treat to watch, and the beach is my favourite hang-out,” says Anand, a long-time
Besannite.
Ah, it’s the air! The air that Besant Nagar breathes is the romance that it creates. The beach, the trees, the churches and the temples are just added attractions.
You’ve got to go there just for the air.
