College bazaar

We've all heard of Pondy Bazaar. And of the China bazaars too that have invaded Chennai. Recently, the MOP Bazaar took place, and invaded the hearts of many a Chennaivasi.

The two-day 'MOP Bazaar', organised by the Entrepreneurship Development Cell of MOP Vaishnav College for Women, was a resounding success if one were to judge it by the crowds it drew. Flashy teenagers were there in big numbers, buzzing around.

This 'bazaar' concept was mainly introduced for students to develop their entrepreneurial skills and improve the business habit among the youth. Social Welfare secretary C K Gariyali, who inaugurated the bazaar, lauded the efforts of the student entrepreneurs.

Almost 60 stalls were put up by the students: a stall had paintings done by the students, another had chaat items that the students had made so carefully. Even a hair-colouring stall was there. There were games for the visitors and everytime someone shot a balloon, the watching crowd screamed so loudly as to drown out the already loud music.

“We had a cool time out there. The games were fun and time-pass. All the stalls had something nice for sale, and it was good that I had a heavy purse today. Other than the stalls and the products, the 'spread' here was very good,” remarked Vimal, with a wink. The 'spread' that Vimal referred to can be inferred as MOP is a girls college!

“We had a tough time preparing these items; Most of them are hand-made - by us," said Deepa proudly, lifting a cute looking jar she had made, even as she cajoled people passing by to buy from her stall. Enterprising entrepreneurship, indeed.

The bores were there, of course. The whole bazaar was very small and people had to tread on each other's feet (not just toes) to walk around. There was no air inside the bazaar and the asbestos sheet focused the heat of the sun on the area. And, many stalls were overcrowded.

Whether the 'stuff' (as the girls called them) sold or not, whether the visitors (mostly guys) had any use for the 'stuff' they bought, time spent at the MOP Bazaar was worth it for the fun, games and the 'spread'!
