Fascinating stuff

A movie may thrill you, it may excite you to the pinnacle of your fantasies. It may boost your confidence, it may whet your appetite. But, there are a few, repeat very few movies that fascinate you. Fascination, in a sense of delirium, you lie thinking about the movie long after it is over.

It was pure, unalloyed fascination that Cheran's 'Autograph' unveiled. Nostalgia was kindled in every person who saw it, from smiling autodrivers to svelte managers. Even college students loved the movie, for the purity with which Cheran depicts his flashback. The movie has gone places, with the Big B, Boney Kapoor and Raj Kumar Santoshi vying with each other for the Hindi remake rights.

One thing in which 'Autograph' scores over other Tamil films running now is the appeal it has. Everybody, male or female, old or middle-aged, have a past. 'Autograph' reminds them of it, those sweet memories. It's so unnerving how we treat the present lightly - and then, in the future, look back and remind ourselves of 'those' wonderful days, which we didn't celebrate at that time in the first place.

"My film is a poetry which is not to be read but to be experienced. An experience which every viewer will feel that it’s taken out of his/ her life. When you get moments to think about the past you will remember the sad and happy moments but then life has to go on since every man has a goal," says Cheran in a pensive mood.

The film depicted that clearly. We do think about the past, we do admonish ourselves for the mistakes we committed, we do laud ourselves for the right things we've done, but life's got to move on, and Sneha pointed that out incisively in the movie.

IT IS MERE LUCK THAT THIS FILM..... - RAM, CHENNIA, 4/8/2004
It's amazing how different people think differently and portray it differently. At this juncture, it would be a fallacy to declare Cheran a 'genius'. A word that selects itself for a very few, those few who adorn that word, instead of the word adorning them. To argue the case of the timeless beauty of the Kanchenjunga, one need not sully the Mount Everest.

Cheran remains one of those quiet, dignified persons in Tamil cinema. He has a dreamy look and that shows up in his films. 'Autograph' is not for people who think, it is for people who dream.

It fascinated me...this 'Autograph'.
