Rain, rain, come again
"Rain is grace;
rain is the sky condescending to the earth; without rain, there would be no life."
It lights up the faces of billions of children with smiles. It has the effect of soothing your nerves, just providing the much-needed break from the routine.
If people were asked to name the best creation of
Mother Nature, I doubt whether any other answers would pour other than rain.
Pray, what's the sweetest smell on earth? Aromas of delicious
foods be damned. The smell that emanates minutes after rain hits the earth is the sweetest smell (for Tamils, that is mann
vasanai).
Pray, what's the best sound the world's ever heard? Forget MJ, ARR and all musical instruments. The pitter-patter of raindrops on the ground is the best sound Man's ever heard on this planet.
From Coleridge to Shelley, from local tea-sellers to the Government of Tamil Nadu, everyone has been inspired by the rain in some way or the other. Be it writing poems or lyrics, be it selling
'hot' merchandise, be it 'harvesting' (rainwater, of course); rain's always been a source of inspiration.
There's the flip side of it too. Sticky knees, untidy umbrellas, grumpy autodrivers and coughing scooters to name a few. Plying
vehicles on the roads becomes difficult. So does playing any game. Businesses get affected. Roadside vendors groan and grumble.
In a city where water has become a precious commercial commodity, rain serves many purposes. It lessens the
water-shortage to a considerable extent.
It is not exactly the rainy season. And even during the
Monsoon it does not rain continuously for a full hour in Chennai. But when it does, one should learn to enjoy it.
Because, what's the best feeling a human being can have? The feeling of getting wet in the
rain.
