A fashion statement
Almost
a year ago, a middle-aged man, travelling in the smooth road from Adyar
to Besant
Nagar, lamented about the lack of a good clothes shops there. Somehow, the
alert businessman with a well-established shop in Elliots Beach overheard that,
and 'Fashion
Folks' was shifted there.
Located diagonally opposite a
beautiful-looking church and an array of petty shops, 'Fashion Folks' comes
across as a big, well-lit showroom jutting out of the row of residences behind
it. Not even a year old, 'Fashion Folks' seems to have become the buzz of the
place, similar to what it was as a small shop at Elliots
Beach.
"It's just 10 months since
we started here, and business is looking bright already. This is one of the posh
areas of Chennai. It deserves a fashion shop, and we are here," says Muthu,
manager, 'Fashion Folks'.
Shirts,
T-shirts and
trowsers are in abundance at the shop. People of Adyar
and Besant
Nagar flock to the store during the weekends. The surprise package is the
presence of a large number of foreign customers, especially Chinese. Why?
"When foreigners migrate to Chennai for work or leisure and want a decent
home, the ideal choice would be Adyar
or Besant
Nagar. They don't like travelling as far as Nungambakkam
or Mount Road for buying clothes and other accessories. So, they just hop in
here," remarks Muthu.
Fashion is just one of those
things that changes every minute. Faded jeans
were a craze not very long ago, but have now become as old as Celeron computers.
Cargos are in at the moment. So, how does a fashion shop like 'Fashion Folks'
keep up with changing trends? "We try to study the international market and
keep equipping ourselves with the latest stuff. In this field, there's no place
for old-fashioned stuff. Just throw them out and go for the latest," Muthu
quips.
More
a 'fashion accessory' store than a 'clothes' shop, 'Fashion Folks' stocks shoes,
chains, studs, and every crazy fashion stuff you can think of. It even has a
kids section, on the top floor, which is usually deserted.
The variety in 'Fashion Folks'
is great, but sadly the prices aren't. The foreigners didn't seem to mind that.
