Sri Kalahastheeswarar Temple in Perumalpattu village, Thiruvallur, is known for the majestic Shivalinga, in all its grandeur.

The temple however, is in a dilapidated condition and is urgently in need of repairs. Also, the Pidari Amman Temple and the Seliamman Temple that are within the Sri Kalahastheeswarar Temple complex are also in a state of disrepair with the doors to the shrines missing and regular worship here had ceased altogether. The idols however, are in good condition.

With the intention of renovating the temple and enabling people to offer worship here, a committee of five members was formed in the year 1995. With God's grace and the patronage of the local people, Mahasivarathiri, Adithiruvizha, Annaabishekam, Sangabishekam, Karthikai Deepam, Margazhi Puja, the English New Year and the Tamil New Year and Gurupeyarchi have been celebrated successfully.

With contributions from devotees, six concrete pillars and a concrete roof in the year 1999 were erected, thus preventing the rain water from seeping into the temple. The Archaeological Department has inspected the temple and had certified that it was built approximately 1200 years ago and has an important historical background. This report appeared in Dhinamani and Dhinathanthi on 9/3/2000. This was also telecast by Sun TV and JJ TV, and the awareness thus created ensured that more people came to the temple to offer pujas and contribute to the growth of the temple. The name of the temple has also been displayed at the Veppampattu Railway Station.

A detailed enquiry into the records revealed that the real name of the temple was Sri Kalahastheeswarar Temple and it was renamed accordingly. A separate chamber has been constructed with the help of contributions from devotees for the purpose of storing puja materials.

The managing committee of the temple decided to build a gopuram on top of the concrete roof and the construction is underway with the help of contributions from devotees. As the first step towards this, the vigrahams were shifted to a safe place with the help and cooperation of the Police Department and the local people, and a homam was conducted by religious scholars and leaders.

Renowned sculptor Vel Murugan from the Kanchi Sankaramadam has been appointed to execute this project. A Gopuram for Shiva, Amman, temples for Ganesha, Subramanya, Nataraja, Navagrahas and Alayamani Mandapams are also planned, thus making this a grand temple project. Presently, the gopuram for the Shiva Temple is nearing completion. Such a massive project naturally involves a heavy financial outlay.

Devotees are requested to come forward and contribute generously towards this noble task.
