Cheran’s successors

Cheran’s success as a hero in ‘Autograph’ has given directors-turned-heroes new hope and encouragement. S J Surya admits to it. And there are more entering the fray. Like director Pushpakavasam, who had directed the Surya-starrer ‘Shri’. The director is now making his debut as a hero in the film ‘Yaarudi Nee Mohini’. And even Lingusamy (‘Run’, ‘Ji’), has been getting offers to play the hero, and is reportedly thinking of giving it a try!

Kamal in a re-make

Kamal Hassan has finally come out of his “no-remakes” stance. The actor will be doing the remake of the hilarious ‘Munnabhai MBBS’, a role which fits him like a glove. Produced by Gemini Films Circuit, who are also producing the Telugu version with Chiranjeevi, it will be Charan who will be directing Kamal. A film to watch out for! Shooting starts May 14.

Charan has launched his own production banner with a film to be directed by Hari, with Surya playing the hero.

Give and take

‘Four The People’ is a big hit in Kerala. Starring Bharat of ‘Boys’ fame in a crucial role, the film is an inspired version of Vijaykant-starrer ‘Ramana’. The rights were sold to Telugu even before the Malayalam film’s release. But the makers of the Malayalam film, in a financial crunch, had tried to sell the rights to Tamil too, but without any success. But after the film became a big hit, Tamil film-makers are vying with each other and bidding for the rights. And it’s the Malayalam makers now who are having the last laugh!

Shocking changes

Shock’, starring Prashant and directed and produced by his father Thiagarajan, has undergone quite a few changes in its cast. Earlier, it was Simran who was slated to do the role. But her sudden marriage put an end to that idea. Now it’s Meena who’s playing the lead. A remake of the Hindi film, ‘Bhooth’, it has Meena playing the role of the possessed wife of Prashant, a role that Urmila Matondkar did with such elan in the Hindi version. The unit members are raving about the actress’ performance.

Parthiban changes direction

Parthiban, busy with his acting ventures, did not have much time for direction. Now he’s acting and directing a new film titled ‘Mazhaikkul Kudai’. And he’s so taken up with the subject that he’s refused at least a dozen acting offers so that he can concentrate on directing this film. “I will accept a new acting assignment only after the release of this film,” says the actor-director.
