All eyes on Jaggubhai

The media is going overboard as usual trying to guess the story-line and everything else about superstar Rajinikant's new film! It was a one-line that the star had told director K S Ravikumar. And now the director and his team are having a discussion on the screenplay. Rajinikant, who had kept away from it, has since joined the team, pitching in his ideas. There would, of course, be the expected punch lines. With A R Rehman for music and Jeeva for camera work (Jeeva was lyricist Vairamuthu's suggestion and Rajinikant accepted it), the sets are by Sabu Cyril. While efforts were on to rope in Aishwarya Rai, it's unlikely that she would do the film. The next on the list is Rani Mukherjee. But one thing is definite. This time it's to be a totally commercial entertainer, with a strict no-no to spiritualism. The superstar seems to have learnt his lesson from the debacle of 'Baba'! Shooting is to commence in July, with 'Pongal' tentatively as the release date. So 'Jaggubhai' with his AK-47 and his Muslim-style garb is on the prowl!

Sonali out

Kamal Hassan has started shooting for his new film 'Vasoolbhai MBBS', the Tamil remake of the Hindi hit 'Munnabhai MBBS'. The film being directed by Charan has Sneha playing the lead. Charan, on a visit to Hyderabad to have a look at the sets at a studio there (the film is being produced in both Tamil and Telugu by the Gemini Films Circuit people) seems to have met Sonali Bendre, the heroine of the Telugu version (with Chiranjeevi) and asked her if she would like to do the Tamil version. Sonali reportedly said she would think about it. But, apparently, it was Kamal's suggestion that Sneha be signed for the role. Kamal, meanwhile, has yet another bi-lingual on the floors. Titled 'Kumar Sambhav', it has Madhuri Dixit in the female lead. It's the role of the hero's wife and mother of his little kid. And Kamal felt the lovely Madhuri would suit the role. It seems like Kamal has begun his year well!

AVM marketing

The AVMs are known for their clever marketing strategy. During the release of 'Perazhagan', the Surya-Jyotika starrer, they had got a huge giant-sized balloon about eight feet in height made. Resembling the ugly hunchback Chinna (Surya) of the film, the balloon is making a round of all the theartres where the film is playing. At Abhirami Theatre, Chennai, present along with Surya and producer A V M Saravanan was Kamal Hassan, to launch the balloon there. Hero Surya is getting accolades for his performance of dual roles in the film.

Cheran's success as director-hero in 'Autograph' seems to have given new hope to directors-turning-heros. Director Pushpavasakan, who has directed the Surya-starrer 'Shri', has now turned hero with his new film 'Yaaradi Nee Mohini'. Lingasamy ('Run', 'Ji') is beng sent feelers by some film-makers to don the make-up for their film. And S J Surya openly admits that he hopes he'll get the same positive response (as Cheran has got) in his new venture 'New' where he's playing the hero.
