Thirumullaivoyil
is a famous holy shrine. But a temple, which has come up recently
constructed by Sadhu Parthasarathi, is attracting a large number of
devotees. And that is the Vaishnavi Temple and the adjoining area
has been named Vaishnavi Nagar. It was here that the internationally
renowned photographer Harry Miller lived.
Ambattur is known to have an affluent municipal
council. If the members get together and work there are bright
chances of Ambattur being transformed into a model locality. This
should come true by the Divine Grace of Vaishanavi Devi. When I
spell the word, Devi I am reminded of the great Tamil writer
La.Sa.Ramamirutham. He is one of the very few writers who commenced
his writing in English and later on moved to Tamil. Even though the
mention of Devi, Ambal, tiger, snake in his stories scare us, it is
for sure that his writings are very interesting. After shifting into
various houses within Chennai he finally moved to Ambattur after
constructing his own house. As soon as he shifted to his house, he
won the Sahitya Academy Award. Even though he has grown old now, he
continues to remain young at heart and speech. Recently when a
meeting was held in his honour in Chennai he gratefully and fondly
remembered the people who were highly concerned about him.
La.Sa.Ra.’s house is situated in Gnanamurthi Nagar and all his
friends felt that the name perfectly fits as Gnanamurthi means ‘Lord
of Knowledge’.
Not only the residential areas but also the streets in Ambattur are
numbered in such a way that it can lead to total confusion. The
Pallikuppam Cross Streets range from numbers one to fifteen, while
there are 31 avenues in Bhanu Nagar. In Lenin Nagar there are 38
cross streets and we can find streets named after the four Nayanmars,
and also Agasthiar, Nandanar, Kalidasa and Kannagi. Other than these
we can find the Old Post Office Street and Old Township Street, but
not the New Post Office Street. It is an uphill task to locate an
address in Ambattur area. We have to first make sure of some
prominent landmark or have to approach the new post office to find
out the exact place.
Let us scan Chennai again…
