Adyar is noted not only for the big banyan tree, the Theosophical Society and the Library but also for another institution that grew as a part of the Theosophical Society for some time. That is Kalakshetra, the training centre for various forms of art. Rukmini Devi, the founder of Kalakshetra, was responsible for the recognition of Bharathanatyam as an art of repute. She herself danced and made her relatives too learn dancing. She ran the institution in such a way that it was possible for children to learn various forms of arts along with regular education. A few years ago, Rukmini Devi separated the Kalakshetra from the Theosophical Society and established it as an independent and self-sufficient institution.
Rukmini Devi actively involved herself in a number of organizations. She held key posts in the Vegetarian Association. The dance recitals of Kalakshetra are known for their artistic beauty and culture. A number of renowned musicians of South India have worked through Kalakshetra. The centenary celebrations of writer Kalki were held in Kalakshetra and a musical programme was organised based on Kalki's songs. Since Kalakshetra is not well linked by buses it is not very easy to reach, especially during evenings and nights, unless you have your own vehicle. But, as an exception, there were thousands of fans who thronged the place just to view the program. Perfection and tradition marked the programme, as they are synonymous with Kalakshetra.
Other than spirituality and art, Adyar is famous for one more institution and that is the Cancer Hospital. Chennai Cancer Hospital has been extended and the main branch functions from a place near the IIT campus. But the hospital still remains in Adyar. Anyone, who visits the hospital and happens to see the patients in that hospital will undergo a transformation like Prince Siddhartha.
The famous "Avvai Home" is also situated in Adyar. This home offers refuge for the destitute women. Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy headed this home and as a respect for all the services that she has rendered, one major road in Adyar has been named after her. The same road was named after the famous writer Kalki. This shows that the problems involved in changing road names have not been understood properly. But for most people it happens to be only Lattice Bridge Road, even now!
