MSSRF invites entries
The year 2004 being the Year of Scientific Awareness, The Hindu Media Resource Centre of the
M S Swaminathan Research
Foundation, Chennai, calls for articles from young and dynamic journalists, with the following objectives:

Create interest among journalists for writing in-depth articles on specific thematic issues having a scientific base

Identify the best articles and create space in the mainstream media for their publication.

Generate science-based resource material in English and Tamil
-
Make best use of mass media to carry relevant scientific information to the community in regional language.
The articles should be on the following themes: (As declared by the Government of India)
Water and sanitation
Health and nutrition
Conservation of bio-diversity
Preparing the community for managing natural disasters
Empowering the people through information technology
Soil management
The entries should reach MSSRF on or before June 15, 2004, says M Velayutham, MSSRF executive director.
The norms for participation are as follows:

The articles should be science-based and have national, regional or local relevance;

Entries should be on anyone of the above themes;

Entries can either be in English or Tamil;

The programme is targeted at journalists working in Tamil
Nadu;

Each entry can extend to a maximum of 1,000 words;

Each journalist is permitted to make only one submission;
-
Only journalists belonging the age group of 25-40 are eligible;
-
Professional details need to be enclosed;
-
The selection committee's decision will be final.
The selection committee will make the selection of the best entries in both languages in each of the above themes. Since all the themes have been covered,
MSSRF proposes to bring out a publication compiling all the selected articles. MSSRF offers a cash award of Rs 3,000 for the best article, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1, 000 respectively.
Expected output:
The best articles carrying cash award would be permitted for publication in the respective newspaper for which the journalist works after
MSSRF's approval.
In the case of television journalists and freelancers, THMRC-MSSRF would organise to get it published either in any leading national or regional daily.
Selected articles would be used as inputs for radio programmes and broadcast in the state network.
The best articles will be available online on the MSSRF website with a byline.
