A home for humanity

Environment

Wonder what the creator had in mind when he created this unique home for the whole of humanity! One is tempted to believe that it was His absolute love for and confidence in the Homo sapiens and their unmatched intellectual abilities that made Him do so. He probably believed that all men, irrespective of caste, creed, colour and religion would cooperate with each other in sustaining the natural bounties for the common good.

However, things did not work according to the Master’s plan. This time Satan had donned the garb of progress, legitimized greed, left no discrimination between needs and wants, whetted man’s appetite for more and tarnished his vision for the future. This has led to irresponsible actions like rapid deforestation, pollution of water bodies, extinction of wildlife and environmental pollution for meagre immediate gains. We have come to a stage where the very existence of the planet and consequently human beings is threatened.

Luckily we have realized the grave consequences that we have created for ourselves in just about time. That is the reason why the world community has decided to work hand in hand to salvage whatever we have left to secure the future of the generations to come.

The United Nations have taken the initiative to spread awareness about the environment by declaring 5th June as World Environment day. The objectives of celebrating this are to change people’s attitude towards environmental issues and participate actively in sustainable development.

Since 2003 has been declared as the International Year of fresh water, the focus is on water this year. It is a resource that is fast depleting. Two billion people all over the world do not have access to potable water. This is one of the several absolute essentials for sustaining life that are becoming scarce. Therefore, it is time to stop and think what we have achieved as a race. Despite the architectural, technological and scientific marvels we have created, we have failed to secure a sound future for ourselves and prevent our probable extinction as a race. Let us pledge on this day to work on war footing to save the environment, even if it means a little personal sacrifice.
