Greenery and well being of humanity

Environment

Trees are an important part of our environment. They help to beautify our communities and clean the air. You can do your part to ensure they remain healthy through their entire life cycle. Trees are a natural element that add peace and serenity to an environment; they cool the air and provide shade in the summer heat; act as a noise buffer and create privacy; help reduce urban runoff and flooding through the interception and storage of water; improve air quality - leaves filter the air by removing particulates such as dust and absorbing carbon dioxide; attract birds and other wildlife. Trees have a tremendous influence on society for they effect our environment, enhance our quality of life, and improve our health. Trees and shrubs, whether native or introduced provide opportunities for the interest and study by the whole community, and when we walk around our own neighbourhood or drive through the countryside, we can appreciate the importance of such a diversity of plants to the well being of humanity.

Planting of trees

  • While planting trees grass should not be allowed to grow to the base of a tree, so that it will remain protected from mowers, weed eaters and other lawn equipment;
  • Plant your tree according to its needs – either in full sun or more of a shaded area - and remember right tree, right place;
  • Water and mulch newly planted trees with a ring of woodchips starting about 2 ft. from the tree base; Soil should be firm, but not tightly packed. Mulching helps to avoid soil compaction and root suffocation. It also helps to keep the root zone cool and moist;
  • Leave roots alone - they provide the tree with stability and are the means through which trees get the nutrients required to remain healthy.

Maintenance of trees

  • Trees should be inspected yearly for new leaves or buds, leaf size, twig growth and crown dieback;
  • Fertilizing should be done in fall or early spring to increase nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium in the soil;
  • Regular and careful pruning should be done during winter to early spring, depending on the type of tree, and performed sparingly – never over prune!
  • Always hire a professional arborist for the removal of a dead or decaying tree, to ensure the disease or improper removal does not affect surrounding structures.
