Urbanization and unplanned industrial expansion is
causing irreparable loss to the agricultural land in our country in general and Tamilnadu
in particular. This will seriously hamper the agricultural production and lead to a food
crisis. The acquisition of agricultural land especially around the city of Chennai
for construction of factories and dwelling tenements must be stopped forth with through an
effective legislation.
Further, the population increase has seriously affected the
land holdings of farmers. They are becoming farm labourers in their own lands.
Consolidation of land, levelling and development of
wasteland and deserts is urgently needed. The management of rain water harnessing
and development of land through effective irrigation system should be implemented.
Industrial pollution is causing harm to the agricultural
land. Farmers are suffering due to smoke, smog and toxic water discharged by heavy
industries. Strict action is needed against such offenders.
