Seminar on security and messaging
Seminar on security and messaging titled 'SnM 2004' was inaugurated at
Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), Chromepet, October
18.
The seminar was jointly organised by the Department of Information Technology, MIT, Microsoft Corporation and Indicom Software and Services, Chennai.
The topics discussed included security concerns in
education and research, integrated security and management, security and stability with MS Windows 2003 server, infrastructure management, messaging with Exchange Server and security with Microsoft Internet security and acceleration server.
Inaugurating the seminar, P Mannar Jawahar, director, Centre for University Industry Collaboration,
Anna University, said there should be good relations between institutions and industry. Institutions should provide what the industry needed. For this, the institutions should be in line with industry standards in terms of technology and manpower, he added.
S Thamarai Selvi, head of the Department of Information Technology, MIT, stated that the workshop was being organised at MIT for the first time. Whatever technology the industry had, could not be suddenly included in the academic syllabus, she said.
P P Sunil, development manager, Microsoft, gave details of various products of Microsoft Corporation.
K B Sridhar, chief executive officer, Indicom Software and Services, said the main objective of the seminar was to create awareness about various security threats faced by computer users and solutions for them.
More than 230 faculties and students from all over Tamil Nadu participated.
Kumar, Technical specialist from Microsoft, spoke about security and stability with MS Windows 2003 server. He explained how the Windows Server 2003 is easier to deploy, manage and use, resulting in a highly productive and secure infrastructure that helps make the network a strategic asset for the organization.
Agniputhran of Symantec delivered a session on Integrated security and management. He explained the client and gateway security solutions which combine firewall, intrusion detection, anti-virus, and other technologies. He highlighted how Symantec's operations revolved around the cycle viz. Alert, Protect, Respond and Manage.
Kevin, a developer evangelist from Microsoft spoke on embedded and mobile computing with .NET, highlighting several security based issues from the perspective of Mobile computing. He explained briefly about Windows XP embedded and Windows CE technologies. He mentioned that Security is not restricted to only networks but is a matter of concern even for any device that is plugged in.
Subramanian, Network consultant at Secure Networks spoke of security issues and highlighted how the Microsoft Internet and Security Acceleration Server could be deployed to ensure very high levels of security amongst remote users. He explained that ISA Server 2004 contains a full-featured, application-layer-aware firewall that helps protect organizations of all sizes from attack by both external and internal threats.
