Seminar on jatropha
A one-day seminar on jatropha is being organised by ITCOT, (Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation of Tamil Nadu Ltd) in Chennai on March 19.
Jatropha proves to be a promising bio fuel plantation and could emerge as a major alternative to diesel and thus reduce our dependence on oil imports and save precious foreign exchange and providing the much needed energy security.
The plant can grow in hostile agro climatic conditions and, therefore, is suitable for wasteland development. It is advisable to go for a minimum acreage of 50 as it is considered to be an economically viable size. From the point of socio-economic development, it generates rural emloyment and enhances flow of income to rural economy - rural production and urban market.
To augument availability of jatropha seeds, the processing units can go for contract farming with small and marginal farmers. To create awareness on this, Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation of Tamil Nadu Ltd (joint venture of ICICI, IDBI, SIPCOT, TIIC, SIDCO and banks) is organising a one-day seminar on jatropha in
