Lionbridge to ramp up its facilities

The Chennai Centre of Lionbridge Technologies Pvt Ltd, the Indian arm of US-based Lionbridge Technologies Inc, proposes to ramp up its facilities and is likely to hire over 700 persons shortly, taking its strength to 800 from 75. It will hire in all 2,000 persons in the next two years.

India is the fastest growing market and is the back office for Lionbridge operations. “It is central to our growth plans and we are bullish on growth prospects here," its vice-president and general manager Jay Sitaram said in Chennai.

Lionbridge Inc's recent acquisition of Bowne Global Solutions (BGS) could mean increased outsourcing business for the Indian centres. Anything the company did in India would now increase by twice, he added.

"We have currently 2,200 employees worldwide and after the BGS acquisition (for a deal of at least $ 180 million) the total number of employees would increase to 4,000. Of this, we have 1,100 employees in India, which will increase 2-3 fold in the next two years," he pointed out.

Lionbridge, which has been operating in India over the last five years, has solution centres in Mumbai and Chennai. "With an expected increase in offshore busines, we may have to ramp up the existing facilities to over 2,200 seats from the present 1,600," he added.

The Chennai Centre, inaugurated in April and providing quality assurance and software testing services, will be scaled up to 800 from the present 75.

Sitaram said China and India were important off shoring destinations for the company's service offerings and Lionbridge was servicing some very high-value clients from India and China. With the availaibility of a talent pool, it's an attractive proposition to be in India and provide a fair value to our customers, he pointed out, adding, "We see a two-three fold increase of our operation in India after two years."

He said the oursourcing industry was estimated to be $ 6 billion worldwide and the company was hoping to garner a lion's share of the market.

On acquiring companies in India, he said he company had grown both organically and inorganically and would look out for opportunities that fit into its line of business.

Lionbridge Technologies Inc is a leading provider of globalisation and testing services. It serves as a outsource partner throughout a client's product and content cycle -- development to globalisation, testing and maintenance. It maintains 21 solution centres in nine countries and provides services under the Lionbridge and VeriTest brands. It reported a revenue of around $ 154 billion in 2004.
