The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) organised the 43rd National Metallurgists' Day (NMD) and 59th Annual Technical Meeting (ATM) at IIT Chennai recently. Dr Mano Ranjan secretary, Ministry of Steel, Government of India, inaugurated the celebrations and said the country owed its prosperity to its intellect. The government was determined to to get the best minds in the country interact and lead research and development in the field of steel industry.
He said it was not just IIT or MBA which offered top careers but also the engineering industry, mainly steel production. This sector should be given importance as other sectors depended a lot on it, he added. Later, he presented the NMD awards.
Dr Baldev Raj, president, IIM, in his presidential speech, said there was a great challenge to the Indian materialistic scientists in the world to produce steel and become leaders in the world. By research and development in the area of steel, India has to become a land of leadership. It is important to involve the younger generation in metallurgy and allied disciplines in science and engineering in the universities and the engineering colleges, he added.
Inaugurating the technical exhibition, Sajjan Jindal, chairman, Resource Mobilisation Committee, said steel was a crucial substance right from safety pin to big products. Metallurgists should address the challenges which were hitherto not touched. He felt India should place restrictions on export of materials like iron and steel. Only finished products should be exported to earn more income.
A special feature of the NMD celebration this year was a dedicated technical session to commemorate the 'World Year of Physics'. NMD awards, Quality Awards and IIM awards were presented to the dignitaries from different parts of India.
