Intellectual Property Seminar 2006
For the first time in India, the Japanese Patent Office and Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation, in association with the office of Controller General of Patents, India, and Mohan Associates, a leading IP law firm, hosted a seminar on Intellectual Property Information and Maintenance with emphasis on the Japanese patent system, the procedure, the time schedule and the benefits of registration of patents in Japan.
Yugi Okuda, Acting Consul General, Consulate General of Japan, presided over the opening ceremony and the keynote address was given by Chandrasekharan, Controller General of Patents, Design, Trademarks and Geographical Indications. The speakers included patent executives from Toyota Motor Corporation, JIII, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, and NALSAR University to provide perspectives on the government, industrial and academic fronts. This seminar also afforded a rare opportunity for interaction with over nine patent office examiners directly.
The seminar provided useful information on intellectual property – trademarks, patents, design, copyright, the system, filing procedures, drafting patent specifications, maintenance and management of IP rights. The object of the seminar was to inform Indian companies, research institutes, educational institutions and others regarding the benefits and procedures of the Japanese patent system, especially among organisations actively promoting innovation.
The seminar also witnessed the inception of the Indian Intellectual Property Alumni Association (INIPAA). The association was inaugurated by A A Mohan, senior partner, Mohan Associates.
The seminar itself is the outcome of efforts of the alumni members of IPR training programmes in Japan. They have been keen to spread IP awareness amongst all sections of Indian society and not be confined to a handful of persons who could travel to Japan and attend training sessions, which they hope to achieve through this association.
Brinda Mohan, senior partner, Mohan Associates, speaking at the launch, said, “This is just a beginning. The success of this event would ensure many more such seminars, courses, training programmes for awareness, maintenance and enforcement of IP rights.”
